Update: Post-Metatarsus Adductus / Varus Operation on Toddler
Hi there!! ☺ As many of you might remember, our son had a surgery on both his feet, his left middle toe and left hip at the end of January. Those who follow me on social media will also know that his casts was removed on 28 February. I though I'd share with you all how the operation went and what we have to do and look out for now.
Post-operation:
In terms of treatment and care from our side:
We are honestly very glad that he has had this operation - life is actually much more pleasant now and taking care of him has become a lot easier. For anyone who has a baby/child needing this or a similar operation, you can see that there is nothing to fear ☺ Good luck to you all and may it improve your child's life as it did ours!!
Bye bye ☺

- His operation was a major success with no further treatment (in the sense of casts or specially made shoes) needed. The Doctor is very happy with his development and adjustment after the operation and only wishes to see him briefly in two months' time.
In terms of treatment and care from our side:
- He needs to wear a special orthopedic shoes by a brand called Walkmates that I bought at Woolworths, but I see Mark and Spencer sells them as well. He needs to wear these shoes for as long as possible every day on the wrong feet, backwards in other words. This is to help the tendon that was cut to reattach in the necessary stretched position by keeping his feet stretched for as long as possible.
- We have a foot exercise to do for him 20 times per foot at every nappy change. In short you place your one thumb on the bunion bone by the big toe and your other thumb on his heel. Your two forefingers go on the bone that is located in the middle on the outside of the foot (it attached to the small toe). You then push with your thumbs to stretch the skin on the inside of the foot. Luckily Robert actually quite likes this when I count it out loud - and, rest assured, this does not hurt him after his operation.
- Not directed by the Doctor, but I apply tissue oil on all of his scars every night after his bath and it makes a big difference. It not only reduces the appearance of the scar but also softens the skin on and around the scar making it more flexible and movable, which helps with his recovery. I also noticed that it reduces the itch from the scar healing.
